Amazon Expands In-Garage Delivery for Prime Members Ahead of Holidays

Amazon has expanded its Key by Amazon In-Garage Delivery service to over 4,000 cities across the United States — just in time for the holidays. 

The service is now available to Prime members in Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and thousands of surrounding areas. Members can visit the Key by Amazon webpage to check if their zip code is eligible for in-garage delivery.

To qualify for the free service, Prime members must have a compatible myQ Smart Garage. Customers can choose to view the delivery in real time through a Ring or LiftMaster camera. However, a camera is not required to use in-garage delivery.

Prime members can begin using the service after enabling the in-garage delivery option on the Key by Amazon app and shop on Amazon as they normally would. During checkout, shoppers should select the address that is labeled “in-garage eligible” and choose “in garage” delivery. 

Packages are securely delivered by an Amazon delivery service professional. Amazon verifies that the packages are being delivered to the correct address and that the delivery service professional is near the customer’s garage through a handheld scanner before opening the door. After the drop off, the customer will be notified that their packages were delivered.

The delivery service rolled out at an ideal time, as consumers are increasingly turning to Amazon and other e-marketplaces for their holiday shopping needs. With 57% of consumers still hesitant to visit a retail store due to health or safety concerns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the contactless, convenient, and secure in-garage delivery service is an enticing draw to shoppers seeking to limit in-person interactions.

The initiative may drive more Prime members to shop on Amazon’s marketplace this holiday season and can increase membership subscriptions — especially since 81% of consumers said they are more likely to purchase a product with free shipping. Although the membership requires a fee, shoppers are not charged for the delivery of any products offered through Prime. Amazon sellers should make products in their catalog Prime-eligible by cyber week to maximize their sales.

In addition to the expansion, Amazon has launched a new in-garage delivery service for groceries. Prime members can order groceries from Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market and have it delivered into their garage. The Key by Amazon In-Garage Grocery Delivery service is currently available in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas, and Chicago.
