Spending More Time on Amazon
Stay on top of the latest e-commerce and marketplace trends.
Recent figures released by comScore and reported by USA Today reveal that online retailing has experienced a large growth in 2012. Furthermore, the figures show that behind Facebook, Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft and AOL, Amazon is the site American web users spend more time on, ranking sixth in time spent on sites in 2012.
Popular Online Retailers
eCommerce website Amazon.com is the 6th most popular website in the US (and leading the online retail markets in countries such as the UK, Germany and France, but we shall get to that another time). Web users spend 1% of their time online at Amazon, edging eBay with 0.9% of time spent online; 1 in every 100 minutes surfing the Internet are spent on Amazon.com. If we subtract Facebook and Google, it comes out to about 1 in every 80 minutes.
Together with eBay, Amazon has benefited from an increase in online shopping. Sales rose 35% at Amazon during the final 3 months of 2012. The surfing figures include Amazon’s Prime Instant Video Service, which streams movies and TV programs now too (a selection to soon grow and include the Food Network and Travel Channel). This all counts for millions of engaged visitors. How many exactly?
Desktop visitors amounted for 128.2 million in the past year, and mobile visitors 80.5 million more.
Good Company
209 million visitors in a single year, spending a good portion of their time surfing the web, more than any other online retailer this speaks volumes. The more visitors and the more time they spend on Amazon increase your visibility and selling potential.
Whether users are visiting for shopping they are doing it at Amazon; if they are there to watch the Food Channel, and fancy one of those Japanese kitchen knives ? they will shop on Amazon. The opportunities are there, but are you there?
Meet The Shoppers at the Buy Box
With streaming videos and a mobile platform, Amazon is doing everything to beat the competition and be on top of such popularity lists. The competition has now moved from listing your products on Amazon as a third party seller, to winning the Buy Box. Amazon Marketplace gives approved sellers the chance to list your products where millions can see, but only one seller can feature in the Buy Box at any given time.
This opened a new frontier, where sellers compete for the Buy Box. They can do it the rules-based way, which will run their prices down to the ground, or in more sophisticated, not based on rules. The latter services (Feedvisor, for one), will help you win the Buy Box, optimize your prices, and by that optimize your sales and profit. It will not run you out of business or profit…
Amazon Marketplace has met the challenge and established itself as a top online retailer and top website. The traffic is there, Amazon is on the screens of computers and mobile devices at this very moment! It is now the time to take the next step.
