How to Participate in Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly Program

Amazon last week announced Climate Pledge Friendly, a new program designed to make it easier for consumers to discover and shop for more sustainable products on Amazon’s marketplace.

The program offers sellers and brands the opportunity to tout the Climate Pledge Friendly label on their listings to alert consumers in their search and discovery of more sustainable products, and the online retailer also created a dedicated storefront for the program, allowing shoppers to either browse by category or search for specific products with the green label.

The label is already featured on more than 25,000 products to signify that the products have one or more of 19 different sustainability certifications that help preserve the natural world, such as reducing the carbon footprint of shipments to customers. The Climate Pledge Friendly selection includes grocery, household, fashion, beauty, personal, and electronic products — among other categories — from brands ranging from Seventh Generation, Burt’s Bees Baby, and HP Inc. 

The Climate Pledge Friendly initiative supports Amazon’s commitment to reach the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net zero carbon by 2040. The company has already committed to reaching 100% renewable energy by 2025, ordered over 100,000 fully-electric delivery vehicles, and plans to invest $100 million in reforestation projects around the world. 

Amazon also launched the Climate Pledge Fund, a $2 billion fund to back visionary companies whose products and services will facilitate the transition to a low carbon economy, which will make it easier for customers to access product choices that align with our commitment to a more sustainable future.

How to Participate 

The U.S. sustainability market is projected to reach $150 billion in sales by 2021, according to Nielsen, and 48% of U.S. consumers say they would definitely or probably change their consumption habits to reduce their impact on the environment. 

To further reach these consumers and participate in Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program, your product must be certified by at least one of Amazon’s third-party certifications or be certified by Amazon’s Compact by Design initiative. Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program is open to all sellers and brands that operate on its marketplace, and there is no fee to participate. 

By participating, you can reach more customers who are searching for sustainable products and help shoppers more conveniently discover and shop for Climate Pledge Friendly items. Qualifying products are labeled within search results and product pages, and are featured in a dedicated section of Amazon’s store.

If you are interested in pursuing a certification from one of the sustainability certifications Amazon has partnered with, you should review Amazon’s list of certifications to determine which ones match your product type or sustainability aspiration and work with the certifier directly to begin the process. 

Amazon receives updates from the certifiers themselves and works with them to identify Climate Pledge Friendly products, so once you are certified, you should not need to make any changes to your product data on Amazon to be included in the program. 

To be certified Compact by Design, a product must have a qualifying unit efficiency, be registered in the Amazon Brand Registry program, and be in an eligible category.
